Does mizoram want to be independent from India?

Mizoram, a state in northeastern India, has a complex history regarding its relationship with Indian independence. The desire for independence has been a significant issue in Mizoram’s past, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s, when the Mizo National Front (MNF) led a movement for secession from India. This culminated in a violent insurgency that lasted for several years.

However, in 1986, the MNF signed the Mizoram Accord with the Indian government, which granted the state a high degree of autonomy and recognized its distinct cultural identity. Since then, there has been relative peace, and the focus has shifted towards development and integration rather than outright independence.

While there are still some groups in Mizoram advocating for greater autonomy or independence, the mainstream political sentiment has largely moved towards working within the framework of the Indian Union. The situation can vary over time, influenced by political, social, and economic factors, but as of now, the majority of the population appears to favor continuing as part of India while seeking more autonomy and development.
David M Thangliana:The Mizoram Accord was signed June 30, 1986 between the Union Government and the then outlawed Mizo National Front which fought for independence. The Accord clearly sisaid it is accepted that Mizoram is an integral part of India. So, post-1986, Mizoram does not want independence from India.
